Well designed game inspired by the old Avalon Hill and SPI board games. I have been waiting for a long time for someone to pick up the feel of the old hexagon strategy games. This app is even better because you dont need to remember the rule book and it has great added features like "fog of war" , morale, unexpected outcomes & reinforcements, multi- player or against the computer. The flow of the game is very good, the campaigns are very well balanced and quite challenging at the harder levels. Bring on some more of these campaigns and other games, especially Napoleanic era and WW2. Suggestions for improvement - a undo move function for when you mess up.
Pros: - graphics and animations. Reminds me of miniature table top wargaming. I really like how this was done on this game, with the exception of the infantry charge, which is a little weak. - easy to learn (tutorial) easy to play. - game scale, the map and units just simply work well. Dont need zoom in/out, dont want zoom in/out. - theme, love American Civil War games. Cons: - no ability to control unit facing, which was such a critical aspect in tactics of the period. - maps too small, not able to take full advantage of calvary speed and maneuverability. In short, Civil War 1863 is just the kind of game Im looking for to play on the iPad. My thanks go out to the developers for doing a wonderful job. With just a little more focus on unit facing and the devestating effect that a flanking move would have had in that type of warfare (see Sid Meiers Gettysburg), I would have given the game 5 stars. As it is, its well worth the couple bucks I paid for it simply because....its fun. I hope more developers follow suit. Myles.
... on iOS4 / iPad 2 ! Otherwise it would be a nice game.
Enjoyable, wish more was included in original price.
Fairly simple to play. Disappointed with the lack of flexibility in the game. Would be nice to be able to place troops/reinforcements. Bummed that there was only one campaign. You arent getting any more money from me.
Enjoyable ,you would think cannons would be stronger vs open area forces than they are but you learn to deal with it. I like the strategy involved land contours and such.
The game is nice, but it is too short. You have to pay more to unlock other campaigns. There is also a problem with the (awful) Game Center. It pops up even if you disable it.
Not a bad way to spend a few hours!
Great game all around. Bug on Plum Run Valley in Grand Command that needs fixing. Says to accomplish goal in 20 turns but only goes up to 17 turns and then your defeated. Couple of times Im within reach of accomplishing the goal and by turn 17 the game says Im defeated.
I have lost sleep over this silly little game!
The game is good for people who like history and strategy. But after getting the game you need to pay 99 cents for a bunch of levels. Please fix it so you only have to buy the game and get all the levels with it.
You have to play this game now!!!!
Good game. But if you fail one objective you fail the mission is just not right
Good game. Entertaining and engaging. If you are fascinated by the American Civil War and turn based strategy games, youll love this. Kill Johnny Reb or Billy Yank. Good times.
This game like all Hex War games are terrific and very addicting .may have to go to rehab
My favorite of the hunted cows. I think it gives a real sense of civil war tactics. Repayable many times. It gives a nice balance of shooting combat and face to face charges.
I cannot thank the developers enough for issuing this amazing game. I have been looking for turn based strategy games of this type for a long time, and now I have one I can play anywhere on my iPad! Most of the scenarios are quite challenging and highly replay-able since you can adopt different tactics for most of them. The AI is pretty good overall. The only things missing are some details like the ability to limber and unlimber artillery, like infantry or cavalry changing formations. And there are some spelling/grammatical errors in the mission descriptions. The learning curve is very easy thanks to the introductory campaign, and yet it can take a while to truly master the game. The added campaigns are excellent and the price is unbeatable for a such a high-quality game. So there you go, 5 stars without a moments hesitation! Cant wait for a Napoleonic version...
Good strategy game. Finally something with a civil war theme. Well worth the cheap price.
Very poor support, updates fail to work at all on ipad! No surprise that "dissatisfied, underwhelming, disgruntled, lousy " nick names was already taken!
